Market Research Report On China's Coke and Coking Industry in 2006

Market Research Report On China's Coke and Coking Industry in 2006

Introduction

Published:Mar 23 2007

Coke enterprises have spread across China except Hainan and Tibetan Autonomous Region; by the end of 2006, according to statistics by National Bureau of Statistics of China, there were 985 coke enterprises in China. Apart from 50 enterprises which are coke enterprises affiliating to key large and medium sized iron and steel complexes, over 90% of coke enterprises are independent coke enterprises which only deal with coking to supply urban citizens with coal gas or produce coal products; by the end of 2006, production capacity of coke has exceeded 0.3 billion tons; 1/3 of production capacity is in iron and steel complex or beyond large and medium cities, and over 60-70% of production capacity is in coal-producing areas.

In 2007 production capacity of coke will exceed apparent consumption volume by 8.6%. Though production capacity is still excessive, degree of excess is far below that in 2005 and 2006. In 2008 production capacity will be 5.7% lower than demand and then supply and demand structure will have a fundamental change. However, if 70% of production capacity which need to be washed out can be closed, supply and demand structure in 2007 will change; but if demand increases by 5% and production capacity closed are lower than expected, in 2008 production capacity will be still excessive. Price trend of coke industry depends on speed at which government closes production capacity to be washed out as well as growth rate of iron and steel industry.
