Market Research Report On China's shipbuilding industry in 2006

Published:Feb,26 2007

Introduction

Since China's reform and opening up to the outside world, especially from 1990's, China shipbuilding industry becomes a black horse with shipbuilding capacity and productivity developed rapidly. In 1981, production capacity of China shipbuilding was only about 800,000 comprehensive tons, while it rose up to 1,500,000 comprehensive tons in 1990, 2,500,000 comprehensive tons in 1995, and already had a breakthrough of 5 million comprehensive tons in 2000. In 2004, shipoutput reached 8.8 million deadweight tons which accounts for 14 percent in world shipbuilding market.
At present, domestic shipbuilding industry is primarily constructed of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), which is structured partially on the foundation of institutions and enterprises, affiliated to the former China Shipbuilding Industry General Company, CSSC and CSIC are named as North Corporation and South Corporation. It is under direct leadership of Commission of Science &Technology and Industry for National Defense, in which the North Corporation owns 48 industrial enterprises, 28 scientific & technological research institutes, 15 share holding/joint sharing companies in CSIC, and are distributed in over 20 provinces/cities in China. Its subsidiaries include Dalian Shipyard, Dalian New Shipyard, Bohai Shipyard, Wuchang Shipyard, Shanhaiguan Shipyard, China Ship Research & Development Academy, China Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd., China Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. South Corporation includes industrial enterprises such as Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Co.,Ltd, Hudong ¨C Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group), Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuiding Co.,Ltd, Guangzhou Shipyard International Corporation Limited, Shanghai Shipyard, Oasis Machinery, Haiying Enterprises Group Corporation, and some major institutes such as MARIC-Marine Design & Research Institute of China as well as other shareholding companies such as CHINA SHIPBUILDING TRADING CO., LTD. and Hongkong HuaLian Shipbuilding Co.,Ltd. Over a few decades of development, shipbuilding in China has grown to be export-oriented industry. At present, 70% of China's shipbuilding output are exported and these vessels are exported to 91 countries and regions, including shipping stronger like Greece, Norway, U.S.A., U.K. and shipbuilding countries such as Japan, Korea and Germany. Percentage of the vessels China has exported to advanced countries and regions accounts for over 60% of all exported vessels of China. Capacity tonnage for vessels exported is increased up to hundreds of thousands, and even 300,000 in the meanwhile, variety of exported vessels is extended to some other specialized vessel with higher technology content and higher added value such as refined petroleum ship, chemical ship, large container-vessel, Roll-on& Roll-off, liquefied natural gas carries, marine oil-storage ship and VLCC(very large crude carrier).
